Research on humanitarian Issues (Refugees and IDPs)
Since the 2021 military coup in Burma, BRI recruited Chin youth in the United States who are college and university students to conduct research about Chin and other refugees seeking refuge in India and also the situation of IDPs in Northwestern Burma, focusing on Chin State and Sagaing and Magwe regions.
As of December 2025, displacement has reached historic levels with 3.63 million internally displaced and 1.59 million displaced outside of Burma. More than more than 7,500 civilians have been killed since the coup, including at least 976 children, and more than 30,000 people have been arrested by the junta regime.
After the research skill training, the Youth Research Volunteers travelled to Mizoram State to conduct the research and wrote the report. The report includes its findings and recommendations. Among many other recommendations, it includes the presence of UN agencies such as UNICEF and WFP in Mizoram State to support both the refugees and the local Mizo communities in Mizoram.
The latest report is India-Burma Border: Strengthening Education for Chin Refugees and Mizoram Host Communities, which was published in April 2025. Please see the reports in the Publications section.
